How to convert TSV to CSV

Paste tab-separated text or open a UTF-8 .tsv or .txt file, then choose Convert to CSV. Use actual TAB characters between columns. Copy the result or Download converted.csv. Counts describe logical data records, excluding the header; a multiline cell is part of one record.

Input limits

Use up to 5 MB per input. The first record supplies unique, non-empty headers, trimmed at their edges. Every record must have the same number of fields. Double-quote cells containing TABs or line breaks, and double an embedded quote. Empty text lines are ignored; explicit empty fields and whitespace-only records are retained.

TSV to CSV example

TSV input: actual TAB separators, 3 data records
id	name	note
001	"Alex, Jr."	"Ready	for review"
002	Олена	"First line
Second line"
003	" Sam "
CSV output: 3 data records and 3 columns
id,name,note
001,"Alex, Jr.","Ready	for review"
002,Олена,"First line
Second line"
003," Sam ",""

Frequently asked questions

Does this detect commas or other input separators?
No. TAB is always the input delimiter, with standard double-quote escaping. Commas and semicolons inside TSV cells remain ordinary text and are quoted in CSV when needed. A single-column TSV is valid. Text such as backslash-t is not a TAB separator. Header names are trimmed and must be non-empty and unique; field counts and malformed quotes are checked before conversion.
Are IDs, empty cells, Unicode and cell line endings preserved?
Values stay strings: 001 is not converted to a number, spaces are not trimmed, and empty cells remain empty. Quoted TABs, commas, quotes and multiline values are parsed as cells. UTF-8 BOM and CRLF, CR or LF record endings are supported. Generated CSV uses commas and LF between records. Copy and Download retain original uploaded line endings inside cells; textarea previews normalize CRLF/CR to LF. Manual source edits adopt the displayed text. Formula-like strings beginning with =, +, -, @, TAB or CR receive an apostrophe during safe CSV export, including header names.
What happens with headers only, errors or changed input?
Header-only TSV creates a header-only CSV with zero data records and the detected column count. Physically empty text lines are skipped, while separator-only records and quoted empty cells are preserved. Empty output cells and cells containing TABs are explicitly quoted, so even a one-column empty record remains visible as CSV syntax. Invalid TSV or an oversized input clears the previous result and disables Copy/Download. Editing, uploading another file, Use example and Clear also reset results. No files or conversion results are sent to a server. If clipboard access is unavailable, Download preserves the complete CSV independently of the preview.
